Shriya Paliwal crowned Miss India

Stamford, CT: Shriya Paliwal, 21, a senior at NYU Stern School of
Business, and hailing from Greenwich, CT, was crowned Miss India
Connecticut 2009, “Beauty from the Heart,” during the first-ever beauty
pageant held at Westover School Audi-torium, here on November 8 The
runner-up of the coveted title was Ashley Palathra, 17, a resident of
Fairfield, CT. A student of Fairfield Warde High School, her hobbies and
interests are piano, reading, dancing, and running.
Shriya Paliwal’s hobbies and interests include piano, tennis,
cross-country running, and swimming.
Amisha Sisodya was judged the winner of the Miss India Teen CT contest.
The 15-year-old student of Trumbull High School, resides in Trumbull,
CT. Her hobbies and interests include dancing, singing, reading,
writing, piano, travel, and photography. She beat 10 other....

STAMFORD -- The lights inside the Westover Elementary School auditorium
dimmed low and a bright, white spotlight revealed 21 of the most
beautiful young Indian women in Connecticut.
The stage was set for the first ever Miss India and Miss India Teen
Connecticut "Beauty from the Heart" beauty pageant, held in Stamford on
the evening of Sunday, Nov. 8.
Eleven teen contestants competed for cash prizes, while ten other
beauties between the ages of 17 and 27 competed for a chance to
represent Connecticut at the 28th Miss India USA Pageant to be held in
Florida on Nov. 21. The winners of that pageant will move on to
represent the United States in the 19th annual Miss India Worldwide,
held in South Africa in March of next year.
In the end, four winners were announced: Shriya Paliwal walked away as
the first ever....

Miss India competition blends cultures in

STAMFORD -- The pageant that rolled into town Sunday featured young
women sashaying across the stage in glittering ball gowns to the Shirley
Bassey song "Diamonds Are Forever," a talent exhibition that included
performance of a Mozart piano sonata, and a question-and-answer section
in which one contestant offered up Mother Teresa as the celebrity, dead
or alive, she would most like to have dinner with.
But for all its familiar elements, the first-ever Miss India Connecticut
competition, held before a sold-out crowd at Westover Elementary School,
was a dazzlingly different type of beauty contest.
During one moment, the 20 young female contestants wore traditional
Indian clothes and streamed onto the stage like an array of precious
